WinGD Secures Four New Ammonia Engine Orders for Trafigura Gas Carriers

by Annie

CSSC Group’s Winterthur-based engine development subsidiary, WinGD, has secured four additional orders for its ammonia-powered engines. The contracts cover four 45,000 cubic meter gas carriers, currently under construction by HD Hyundai Mipo, each set to be equipped with WinGD’s six-cylinder, 52-centimeter bore 6X52DF-A ammonia engine featuring advanced high-pressure selective catalytic reduction technology.

These vessels, commissioned by commodities giant Trafigura, underscore the expanding global fleet capacity as ammonia emerges as a critical clean energy carrier on the world stage. The deal adds to a growing list of orders WinGD has received for vessels designed to transport ammonia.

Benny Hilström, WinGD’s Vice President of Market Development, emphasized the company’s technological edge: “Trafigura chose our solution based on demonstrated progress with the X-DF-A engine and its robust performance metrics. With the first X-DF-A units slated for delivery by mid-2025, we will have accumulated significant construction and commissioning experience ahead of these engines’ rollout.”

Recent tests on a single-cylinder version of the X-DF-A have validated key combustion and performance benchmarks, including full-load operation at just 5% pilot fuel consumption. The engine matches diesel-level thermal efficiency while drastically cutting emissions: nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ammonia levels fall below 10 ppm, with nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions under 3 ppm.

WinGD plans to deliver the engines for Trafigura’s gas carriers between early 2027 and early 2028, reinforcing the company’s commitment to pioneering low-emission marine propulsion solutions.
