GE Aerospace has announced two major engine agreements with Ethiopian Airlines Group and Qatar Airways, marking significant milestones in long-standing partnerships and boosting the modernization of both carriers’ fleets with advanced propulsion technology.
Ethiopian Airlines Group has selected GE Aerospace’s GEnx engine to power 11 newly ordered Boeing 787 aircraft, expanding its GEnx-powered fleet from 19 to 30 aircraft. The carrier also reaffirmed its previous order for GE9X engines to equip eight Boeing 777-9 aircraft, with options for six additional units. Both transactions include comprehensive service agreements covering engine maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO), reflecting Ethiopian’s continued emphasis on operational excellence and reliability.
“These agreements strengthen our partnership with GE Aerospace and support our strategy to expand our fleet with the most efficient and modern engine technology,” Ethiopian Airlines said in a statement.
Qatar Airways also deepened its collaboration with GE Aerospace through a series of historic agreements finalized during U.S. President Donald J. Trump’s diplomatic visit to Doha. The airline committed to purchasing over 400 GE engines—including 60 GE9X and 260 GEnx engines, plus additional options and spare units—for its upcoming Boeing 777-9 and 787 aircraft. This marks the largest wide-body engine order in GE Aerospace’s history.
The deal builds upon Qatar Airways’ previous order for 188 GE9X engines, bringing its total to 248. It also adds to the airline’s existing commitment for 124 GEnx engines powering its 787 fleet. As with Ethiopian’s agreements, these contracts include long-term service deals aimed at maximizing engine uptime and performance.
“These investments demonstrate our focus on equipping our fleet with the most efficient, powerful engines available, backed by long-term support,” said Qatar Airways leadership.
The GE9X, developed for the Boeing 777X, and the GEnx, used on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, represent the most advanced wide-body commercial engines in GE’s portfolio, offering improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and enhanced reliability.
Together, these deals underscore GE Aerospace’s pivotal role in powering the next generation of global air travel, while cementing its partnerships with two of the world’s leading airlines.
