Wizz Air Posts Profit Drop Amid Engine Groundings, CEO Highlights Resilience

Wizz Air reported a net profit of €213.9 million for the fiscal year 2025, marking a 41.5% decline from the previous year as the airline grappled with a series of persistent operational disruptions.

The Hungarian low-cost carrier also posted a comprehensive profit of €225.8 million, falling short of its earlier guidance of €250 million to €300 million. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) came in at €1.1 billion, down €58.9 million year-on-year.

Despite the profit slump, Wizz Air’s total revenue climbed 3.8% to €5.3 billion, bolstered by record-breaking passenger traffic of 63.4 million during the fiscal year.

“I describe our fiscal year F25 with two words: resilience and transformation,” said CEO József Váradi in the earnings release. “In an environment where rare challenges have become recurrent, Wizz Air has evolved structurally, embedding increased flexibility into our standard operating model.”

A major headwind this year was the forced grounding of a significant portion of its fleet due to Pratt & Whitney’s GTF engine issues. By the close of fiscal 2025, 42 aircraft were grounded for engine inspections, along with 3 additional jets stranded in Ukraine. The airline projects around 34 aircraft will remain grounded by the midpoint of the next fiscal year.

Váradi emphasized the company’s ability to weather ongoing disruption. “Despite the unproductivity of a grounded fleet, we successfully delivered a second consecutive year of profitability,” he said. “Wizz Air is a more resilient business today, with more than a year of experience operating under extraordinary conditions — ones most airlines never face, where demand far exceeds supply.”

Nonetheless, investor sentiment reflected concern, with Wizz Air shares tumbling 23.5% in morning trading shortly after 10 a.m. CEST.
