Rolls-Royce is set to launch an advanced 12-cylinder variant of its mtu Series 2000 engine, the 12V2000 M96Z, targeted at fast yachts, patrol, police, and sportfishing boats starting in 2026. The newly developed engine delivers a substantial power boost to 1,634 kW (2,222 mhp) from its predecessor’s 1,472 kW (2,002 mhp), achieving a remarkable increase in power density with minimal changes in size and weight compared to the previous 12V2000 M96X model.
Dr. Jörg Stratmann, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, emphasized the engine’s enhanced performance, power density, and acceleration, calling it a milestone in the company’s mission to offer top-tier propulsion solutions for demanding maritime applications. “This new 12-cylinder mtu Series 2000 engine builds on the success of its predecessor while positioning the platform for future, sustainable innovation,” Stratmann added.
Key improvements include an advanced turbocharger system that delivers strong acceleration with low exhaust emissions—a crucial benefit for yacht operators and other fast vessel users. Structural enhancements such as a reinforced crankcase, strengthened cylinder heads, and new pistons boost reliability and durability. Additionally, the engine supports renewable diesel fuels like hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and meets stringent IMO II and EPA Tier 3 recreational certifications.
Denise Kurtulus, Senior Vice President Global Marine at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, highlighted the company’s expanding leadership in the international yacht market. She noted that the 12V2000 M96Z complements Rolls-Royce’s comprehensive “Bridge-to-Propeller” portfolio, which includes mtu engines, hybrid propulsion systems, pod drives, bridges, automation systems, and a global service network—offering unmatched integrated marine powertrain solutions.
